It is called Krom Akphiwat Phum (the group to develop the village) and is committed to personal, social, and economic development at the village level.

Led by a core group of six men and six women, it operated from a simple building in the grounds of Wat Kundung, a Buddhist temple close to Battambangville. From this center the men and women of the core group travel by motor bike to the villages where they work, staying with the people and becoming part of the village life. As trust gradually strengthens in the villages, scores of creative and highly practical projects have come into existence - all of them generated by the initiative of the local people.

While this book was being written most of these village communities suffered terrorist attacks from Khmer Rouge soldiers or other violent armed groups, and continue to suffer from a serious lack of food. Despite these troubles, none of the projects were abandoned.

By mid-1995, more than 3,000 village people in 21 villages scattered throughout Battamband Province were directly involved in the movement of community development supported by Krum Akhiwat Phum.
